In between working on bulletin boards for the church and watching me, my grandma would take me to the nail salon for her monthly manicures. I was young enough to need supervision but old enough to know nail days were an essential beauty ritual.

It was an honor to witness the magic within a nail technician’s hands.

Sitting at the edge of the leather seats, I would gaze at those rows of O.P.I nail polishes on the walls, the smell of monomer embedded into the air. For a child as girly as I was, this was heaven on earth.

Fast forward to the Snapchat-era when high school upperclassmen posted sparkly videos of their coffin-shaped nails to the newest Ella Mai song. Chunky glitter and neon polish was the mood for that era.

Then something shifted.

More french tips. Funny bunny nails. White toes.

I love minimalism, and there’s always a time and place for simple manicures—mainly when I don’t feel like doing anything extravagant. But in this stripped-back, barely-there era of beauty, it feels like fun nails are not in vogue.

As someone who does her own nails, I take pride in having unique nails and even greater pride in being my own nail tech.

The post-pandemic era of beauty has prioritized a more minimal approach to beauty, but nothing beats stiletto nails embellished with chunky pearls and charms.

Intentional curation is the ingredient to crafting fun, maximalist manicures. We all know black and white pair well, but who knows how to blend burnt orange and cool blue to create a desert chic look?

An eye for design matters.

In 2026, manicures are returning back to color and longer lengths—hello sherbert tones—but we can take this a step further with a return to funky designs, 3D patterns and elevated french tips with a twist.

Ombré is one of my favorite ways to embrace dimension into my nail routine. It’s versatile and an easy elevation for regular manicures.

I recreated aura/gradient nails using blooming gel and nail sponges, but the best and most seamless look for ombré nails is with an airbrush. Though it looks complicated, I’ve been watching how nail artists use it, and it’s not as intimidating as it looks. All it takes is acetone and your gel nail polish of choice. I prefer JODSONE’s brand since it’s inexpensive and comes in an array of colors.

Cynthia Erivo gave me inspo for detailed nails during the Wicked press run in 2025, and I’m running with it in 2026.

3D nails have been undoubtedly the most time-consuming part of my nail routine. The steady hands, the details and the time spent creating flowers for one pinky is enough to send me into a spiral. Instead, I stick to long, curved lines across the nails or even little “bubbles” for the three dimensional vibe.

Note: there’s a difference between solid builder gel and sculpted painting gel. The sculpted gel is best for shell-type designs and anything that requires more movement in your nail art. The builder gel is solid and for structured, more intricate designs like flowers.

When I think of sexuality and quiet confidence, I think of “The Velvet Rope” by Janet Jackson. Cherry red hair. Latex that clings like a second skin. Bold textures. Cashmere-soft vocals crooning over a Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis beat.

Janet Jackson was, and still is, the moment.

“The Velvet Rope,” the 1997 R&B album, finds Jackson at a crossroads. One side of the road is her pursuit and longing for a lover, both emotionally and physically. The other side provokes the listener to look beyond a proverbial velvet rope: this inherent need to feel desired by others. She confronted the parts of humanity that felt too taboo, from the HIV/AIDS epidemic to abusive partners to bisexuality.

It’s personal, provocative and Jackson’s magnum opus.

The album’s sonic and visual fingerprint still lingers within artists like Aaliyah, Britney Spears, Tinashe and more.

From African-inspired motifs to subtle gothic aesthetics, Jackson pushed the boundaries on what desire and rebellion looked like in the 90s. She balanced feminine and masculine attire through her structured tailoring, latex bodysuits and a lot of midriff. Wayne Scot Lukas, Jackson’s close friend and stylist, was the main executor of these looks.

She wore her sexuality on her sleeve, both metaphorically and literally.

Silk married with structured tailoring was a paradigm look for Jackson during “The Velvet Rope” era. And it still works well.

The top, a fitted blazer with padded shoulders, is angular, masculine and serious. The bottom? Feminine and flowing. It’s a look that stands out in and outside of an office.

If you’re in the workforce, this is an easy add to your wardrobe. Pair a waist-cinching blazer with a silky pair of trousers for a similar texture. Keep jewelry minimal though, instead adding a set of clogs or platform loafers to top the look off.

Alternative aesthetics were popular in the 90s, and Jackson was an underrated figure in that movement. Though they’re common now, facial piercings, tattoos and overall body modifications were still taboo. She still embraced it all, even a silver septum piercing, with plunging necklines and midriff.

A mildly risqué look means a maximalist, floral-print shirt is your centerpiece. Similar to many of Jackson’s off-duty looks during this era, a pair of baggy black pants will complement this. Chunky rings are also a must.

Leather jackets are a seasonal transition staple and can elevate even the most basic outfits. The hidden ingredient is in how you accessorize it.

One thing I love about Jackson during “The Velvet Rope” era is how she’s lowkey an outfit repeater. The army green cargo pants she’s wearing are identical to the ones she sports in the “Together Again” music video.

This is a sign to bring out some old statement pieces, like a fringe collar necklace, for some juxtaposition against the leather jacket and cargo pants. A set of chunky boots will elevate it even more.

Lyrically, Jackson strips back the layers to expose a more introspective side of herself. It, of course, bleeds into her visuals.

This is one of those outfits I love but know there’s no occasion where I would wear a feathered vest with a lacy bra. So instead of baring it all, try incorporating jeans with feathered detailing for that added texture. If you want to go all out, a loose-fitting silk shirt will also pair well with these pants.

A quintessential 90s outfit with the chunky boot, this look feels both nostalgic and right on time.

An oversized blazer is a staple. Combine this with some Dr. Martens or chunky boots and a corset for that quintessential blend of masculine and feminine textures and looks.

“The Velvet Rope” era was all about restricted colorways, bold accents and a sense of futurism. Vulnerability meets seduction meets confrontation.

What’s minimal in color is maximal in print.

I’m a big fan of thrifting pieces like this Intempo jacket or finding other, more structured pieces from a retailer like ThredUp. Zip down the jacket and lace up a pair of stiletto heels for a modern version of a night-out look.

Notice the similar silk skirt from Janet’s album listening party? I love seeing how Jackson repurposed pieces to give her outfits a different vibe for each event she attended. You can, too.

In 2026, monoculture is dead and microtrends reign supreme. Our attention is now divided between legacy publications and the innumerable influencers declaring which aesthetic is in. Consequently, little room is left for creative intelligence, personal style and emotional expression.

This week, 90s-era minimalism is the new “chic,” (à la Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy). Next week, a new trend will arrive with a closet full of appealing new clothing and leave with a quiet exit and a forgotten hashtag.

But I’ve discovered there’s a privilege in having a personal style that’s unwavering against this cult-like era of shopping. Trends are volatile but style is forever mutable.

Developing a personal, curated wardrobe in a deeply impersonal world is a road with no destination—despite what the algorithm may tell you. It has several detours, evolving with age, lifestyle and shifting beliefs.

And if you don’t know who you are or what you like, there will be a company that’s eager to tell you.

How to Find Your Personal Style

Curiosity is the first ingredient to crafting great style. Patience is the second.

Have you ever fallen into the rebrand trap? Those moments where your credit card precedes your self-control, and you’ve spent hundreds of dollars on wardrobe overhaul: sequined tops, cerulean pumps and fur coats that are inauthentic to your personality and lifestyle.

Before you immediately buy what you see on social media or aimlessly peruse retailers, develop a system for scouting your next items. A personal style that is intentional starts with curiosity and a taste for sartorial reform. This is the time to slow down and develop childlike tendencies.

Question everything!

Ask yourself:

• What do I own that makes me feel confident?

• What’s practical?

• Whose style do I appreciate? Why? What about their style speak to me?

• Is there a time period I’d love to indulge in through my wardrobe?

• Is there a way to incorporate my other interests into my clothing?

Here’s an example:

• Baggy jeans, kitten heels, corsets and sneakers are what make me feel most confident. Marrying feminine and masculine attire gives me that unique balance I love.

• I work from home so sweatpants, loose-fitting sets and cozy sweaters are practical for me.

• I adore Naomi Elizée, Solange, Mariah the Scientist and Rihanna for their style. The blend of maximalist patterns, tailoring and archival pieces feels both luxurious and unique to each of their brands.

• Late 90s and early aughts. That Essence Magazine and 106 & Park style of clothing. Bronzed down. Dressed up.

• I can pair these Chinese slippers-inspired kitten heels with baggy jeans to give my going-out look a 2000s refresh.

Try incorporating the culture, art and music you enjoy into your style.

Love the bedazzled corsets on Sabrina Carpenter? Implement a simpler version into your nightlife glam. Enjoy the billowy style of Olivia Dean? Try a satin skirt with your next lunchtime outfit.

When you base your wardrobe around your interests in and outside of the closet, a general idea of what to wear can form.

So you’ve let your curiosity unfurl and curated a collection of interests. In other words, you’ve made a Pinterest board and you’re ready to replicate outfits based on those Pins. Wait.

Instead of buying new products on a whim, collect the images you like the most and note what’s prevalent. Cederick Campbell, a Detroit-based style expert, has a great video on this method. If you wanna go full analog, grab a poster board, a printer and some sticky notes for this method.

Are you constantly noting how much you love tabi shoes? Is leopard print a pattern you include frequently? Once you’ve recognized the patterns or recurring themes in your moodboard, add those items to your wishlist.

Now, it’s time to shop.

Another reason why your current wardrobe might feel so impersonal is because you’re only shopping for special occasions. Think little black dresses or that fiery red blazer you’ve been dying to wear but “haven’t found the right event yet.”

Shopping for these imagined events is fine in moderation but can become disorienting when you have dozens of statement pieces but nothing to wear. You need staples and clothes that suit your lifestyle. Not the one you’re dreaming about.

I like to shop on a 5:2 ratio—five idealistic pieces to two imagined pieces, always maintaining a balance of what’s real and what can be created.

Going back to my work-from-home lifestyle, I wear sweats, plain t-shirts, hoodies and cozy sets. On special occasions, I like to pop out in a pair of platform wedges, a corset and statement jeans. Shopping for a capsule wardrobe, basic items that work with almost any outfit, helps build a style that’s suited for your real life.

Full transparency, I enjoy shopping at H&M, ASOS, Fashion Nova and local thrift stores for these pieces.

You must actually wear clothes to see if you like them or not.

What fits a Fashion Nova model might not fit you, and oftentimes it takes trial and error determines that. There’s a sense of humility that comes with this, I know.

Let me be the first to say you don’t need an ultra-curated style that’s social media optimized. I’ve had several outfits that make me cringe, but at the moment, I enjoyed wearing them. But it took me experimenting to learn that.

I also encourage in-person shopping when you can and dedicating a couple days throughout the year to trying on clothes in a store, slowly and intentionally. Look at the cut of jeans. Examine the hemming of your shirts. Walk in a pair of heels.

If possible, bring someone with you who understands your style, needs and body type to give feedback.

Resources to Curate a Personal Style

It can be hard to find resources that connect to your style. The good news is that there’s a wealth of information out there. Here’s a mini guide into how I scout finds for my wardrobe.

• Pinterest—my sanctuary and where I curate my style inspo.

• Physical Media—great for reading up on style trends from the past and present. My recs: Wear It Well by Allison Bornstein, The Chiffon Trenches: A Memoir by André Leon Talley, Essence Magazine archives, Vogue archives—not physical but great for people who don’t have access.

• TV Shows—art imitates life and vice versa. My recs: Sex & the City, Half & Half, Living Single, Insecure, Girlfriends and Michiko & Hatchin.

• Youtube—nothing like longform content to help my attention span. My recs: iconicallyiconic for style breakdowns of fictional characters and eras, ITSCAROLYNGRAY for fashion vlogs, Sydney Marie for fashion finds and trend reports and Jada for style analysis.

• Reddit—a little odd but it’s how I get honest opinions about brands and tips about fashion. My recs: Female Fashion Advice and Petite Fashion Advice.

Style is curated, reformed and enhanced throughout life. There is not one uniform process to do things. Great things take time, attention to detail and attention to quality. They require a sense of purpose that isn’t always identifiable through social media.

What my grandfather said about sermons, I’ve found, is a guiding principle on advice in general. It’s like a salad; you take what’s fitting and leave the rest. This means you can take the advice I’ve given completely, partially or not at all. That’s the beauty in developing a personal style that feels personal.

It’s up to you.

If 2026 is the year of the horse, then February is the month of the Sean Brown Curves bag.

If you don’t know Sean Brown from his totes, you may have seen his viral CD rugs circulating across social media.

The Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist and creative director of Curves, an expansive homeware and clothing brand, marries minimalist design with Black culture. The result? Distinguishable pieces and unmatched home staples.

On February 9, Brown restocked his knit tote bags. It sold out within minutes.

Curves bags have been popular among digital spaces for a while, but the notoriety it built this month feels like a precursor to the global popularity that awaits.

I’m also seeing similarities between the Curves tote and the Telfar shopping bag. The virality, the frequent out-of-stock cycles and the think pieces about why these totes are or aren’t the next best thing in shopping.

Owning one may be the next symbol of cultural cachet for younger consumers—much like the Telfars were and still are.

The Curves tote bag craze isn’t a cult (though the headline does sound nice phonetically) but there is something to be said about the cult of shopping. It’s a system that influences what we buy and how we engage with culture through our spending habits.

Myself included.

In the age of fast-fashion and even faster waste buildup, buying items is as important as wearing them consistently. We’re building lifelong wardrobes not cycling through fads, after all.

The televised theatrics of the early aughts remain a steady fixation in my mind.

Flavor of Love? My most-binged show. Bad Girls Club? A Tuesday night fixture. But America’s Next Top Model, a reality television-based competition series, served me a delectably chaotic slice of the modeling world.

As a child, the mix of eccentric personalities in front of the panel and the wild requests coming from behind it had me yearning for a spot as a contestant. Only the Tyra Banks could have models participate in humiliation rituals in the name of high fashion and a contract.

It’s since aged horribly, though.

Now, imagine my surprise when I learned that TikTok just discovered go-sees… about eight months ago. Though fashionably late to the go-see outfit trend, The Top Shelf is my newsletter, not a 24-hour publication. So let me reminisce!

A “go-see” is an in-person meeting where models connect with agencies, photographers and designers. Like an introduction before booking a shoot.

It was an insider term used in the modeling world, then popularized by ANTM.

Banks, in her true fashion, converted go-sees into full-blown challenges, making contestants scurry to several meetings across the city within a fixed time. Still, through chaotic taxi rides and flustered reactions, the models’ outfits were always understated, timeless and relatively practical for gallivanting around Manhattan.

During go-sees, models were a blank canvas for clients. Think minimal makeup, simple clothing and slick back hairdos.

And in an era of McBling and Y2K futurism, elevated basics translated beautifully on screen, then and especially now. Mainly because the “go-see outfit” is an easily replicable recipe: a black shirt, skinny jeans, a shoulder bag and heels.

Having a customized go-see outfit (for in and outside of work) is the perfect crutch when digging through your closet yields no results. Personally, the kitten heel and jeans combo has saved me from much peril.

You may not be a contestant on one of the most iconic shows of the 2000s, but it’s possible, and incredibly easy, to use on-duty model looks as a style template that complements your daily life.

For an office-lifestyle, let your go-see outfit include a tote for laptops, planners and the numerable Post-its you have stacked together. Instead of heels or sneakers, a statement bootie brings a sense of panache to the workplace.

Want to tone it down? Return to a subtle staple like the Puma Speedcat shoes.

Statistically and anecdotally, it’s no longer taboo to be alone. For that reason, I’m proclaiming myself as Miranda now, indulging in life as it is.

To be loved intimately by someone is an unparalleled pleasure, but I’d be lying if I said there are way better things than a gift from the heart—specifically your own. Seriously, who knows you better than you?

I spent my last few bucks in college buying this and Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Crush 40, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It’s velvety, long-lasting and unfortunately worth the price tag.

Patrick Kelly’s Runway of Love — $45 $13

A perk of having cultured friends is learning their style obsessions. Patrick Kelly is the obsession.

Kelly, a Black-American designer, used racial imagery like the golliwog in his clothing to make timeless designs. His clothing, famously adorned with buttons, has a certain whimsy that felt ironic yet playful in the cultural backdrop of the 80s and 90s.

Eclecticism, gaiety and nostalgia marry in his designs, so it’s a no-brainer that this book is high on my wishlist.

Adidas Japan Shoes — $130

Last year, one of the best pieces of style advice I took was to dress for my actual life, not my ideal one. As much as I would love to sport Carrie Bradshaw-style kitten heels to Trader Joe’s, I love a comfy shoe that’s both practical but stylish enough to stand out on aisle six.

The Anise bag is the Le Teckel bag’s little sister: similarly stylish and more attainable. That’s reason enough for me to want it in every color.
