One of the perks of having a boyfriend is not just having a companion; it’s having access to someone else’s wardrobe—especially if that someone has great style.

Don’t mistake my love for fashion with my love for… well, love. I’m a sentimental woman with an affinity for dinner dates and a fresh bouquet of roses every month. But it’s what’s on him—not in him—that excites me more than any love letter could.

A man’s wardrobe is a collection of his experiences, interests and lifestyle. Much like your own style, each piece should tell a story and unveil a memory only few know. Beyond that, I actually have a deep appreciation for menswear. The tailored blazers, deep pockets and velvety fabrics make it feel sophisticated yet casual. Smart, yet unpretentious.

The right menswear has panache and intention. It cares about the finite details of an outfit—the subtleties that make clothes a statement, a story.

Happy Monday! Though it’s the beginning of the week, I’m already reminiscing about Friday nights in my favorite cities. New York, D.C, Nashville, my heart yearns for you.

Summers are notoriously for rooftop parties, concerts and early morning rides back home with sore feet and a camera roll full of your best outfits.

Gen Z has been less social and more sober than past generations, though. According to studies, we’re drinking less—down to 54% in 2025 from 58% in 2024—and protein-maxxing more. Parties, bar crawls and nightlife are not obsolete, but it’s surely not what it once was.

Still, I love a good night out. A Boiler Room set? Count me in. The club? Let me put on my kitten heels and order an espresso martini.

The statistics don’t lie, but I believe partying (and party wear) is essential for every twenty-something. Getting ready, curating the perfect playlist and digging through your closet to find the right pieces for every event is a hard-learned lesson.

People with an impeccable wardrobe will know open-toed shoes are a huge pass for concerts but a must for rooftop bars. It’s the difference between a perfectly curated outfit and something merely for social media.

Either way, party wear (whether it’s for the club, the DJ booth or the bar) should feel free and fitting on you—made for dancing, sweating and everything in between. It’ll highlight your best features without sacrificing comfort.

That’s the perfect look. To me, at least.

Semi-closed toed shoes are my favorite for concerts. Though flip flops are summer streetwear and beach day staples, opt for something more enclosed instead. Standing in general admission during concerts taught me to avoid getting my feet crushed by any means.

That’s why I’m a fan of low commitment shoes: low-heel or flat shoes that offer support, comfort and style. My go-to is an elevated sneaker; I recently ordered the Adidas Taekwondo Mei sneakers and realized it’s a shoe I can take anywhere—from the office to the dance floor.

For something more formal, wear a sleek pair of mules or kitten heels; they’re a little less low-commitment, (for the nosebleed seats) but the right pair will stun with almost anything in your closet. That’s why the Tracieshoes mesh heels are high on my wishlist.

Boiler Room sets feature DJs surrounded by the crowd in sweaty, mosh-pit-like performances, so leave the ballroom gowns where they lay. Instead, do a matching set. I recently discovered Fashion Brand Company while scrolling through Pinterest and have been enthralled ever since. Their brand identity, like their apparel, is eccentric; even their most-common recycled fabric (because, of course, they recycle fabrics) is an “eek-ho” ribbed tencel fabric.

The tides are turning from minimalism and quiet luxury to more audacious pieces. And from what we see on the runway, fringe is in (from Chanel to Givenchy.) But has it ever really left?

One of my favorite styling tips is to make an outfit more visually appealing by adding texture, and fringe looks amp up any wardrobe. Swap out a basic shirt with a fringe top and pair it with you favorite boyfriend jeans and a snakeskin heel for a low-effort, high-appeal look. When I started “The Top Shelf”, I wanted to create an avenue to express my eye for design, culture, style and beauty; I’m still learning but now with over 100 shopping fiends like myself to guide me through this journey.

I’ll say it: I wasn’t the biggest fan of flip flops until recently. Being born in the early aughts, I’ve seen its descent in real time. In the 2000s, it was a beach staple. In the 2010s, the Birkenstock surpassed it and became a runway fave.

But in the 2020s, designers are back flocking to this closet staple.

Last year, it was The Row’s Dune flip flop. This year, it’s the viral Havaianas x Isabel Marant collab.

At work, I’m producing stories about flip flop styling. At home, I’m seeing them at airports, stores and on the street.It’s got me thinking: when did the flip flop, a shoe that’s arguably the antithesis of high fashion and luxury styling, become chic again?

2020s style can be attributed to a blend of effortless, “cool girl” fashion versus the Y2K revival—a symbol of futuristic maximalism. The flip flop fits both worlds.

The effortless dresser can pair silk skirts with heeled flip flops while the 2000s enthusiast can sport low rise jeans and the classic sandal à la Halle Berry.

No longer seen as a beach shoe, the flip flop is now an easy way to elevate or tone down an outfit.

It’s versatile, not tawdry. Casual, not basic.

Monochromatic Moments

While pastels are one of the biggest color waves of the year, opt for a rich mustard yellow color combo instead. I’ve been eyeing how Kai Collective, a contemporary fashion and lifestyle brand, uses rich tones in their branding, and it feels refreshing against the cultural lean towards lighter tones.

Pair their barrel leg jeans with a matching fitted tank top, and for that barely-there, minimalist vibe add Tkees flip flops in Lemon Curry. Don’t worry if you don’t know how else to style bright yellow flip flops in your wardrobe; bright colors work best together. (Think the Tkees sandals with the Curves tote in Lemongrass.)

Last, add a cherry red mini bag to match the iconic logo from Kai Collective’s jeans. The Sack Bag from Marc Jacobs is my favorite addition.

Athleisure-ly

This updated take on the athleisure trend of the 2010s gives you both function and flow. 90-degree days are ahead, so fabrics like linen, chambray and Uniqlo’s cotton t-shirt are lighter for the skin. The Adidas track pants are one of those timeless staples that’s a must have, both essential for athleisure looks of 2010s and 2020s.

Compliment this baggy look with a wild card: the Melissa flip flop. In another iconic flip flop collaboration with Ganni, these summer shoes offer comfort, structure and flair with its ruffled jelly straps. Bring this nostalgic look back to the 2020s with a large clutch bag.

Rooftop Scenes

It may be a Euro summer—a season of idyllic strolls through the Mediterranean—but nothing beats a vintage rooftop vibe. This time, elevate your flip flops into a simple kitten heel. Aldo’s bone-colored heels are great for more dinner scenes and casual strolls in a go-see outfit.

Old Navy’s collab with Christopher John Rogers feels like a perfect addition to this heeled flip flop. Oversized and acetate glasses are trending now too, but Polette’s sheer brown sunglasses feel both modern and vintage, depending on the style you’re going for.

May has been a whirlwind.

My birthday, my best friends’ law school graduation and the kickoff of summer has left me feeling optimistic about the season ahead. It’s finally time to be outside and I refuse to be ashy or flaky this summer.

As summer is rounding the corner, so have my beauty priorities. Sweat, sun and SPF are changing how I treat my skin. Instead of heavy body butters and lotions, I want my skin to feel hydrated and nourished—not dry or too slick.

In the words of my mom, I don’t want to look like my face is oily enough to fry fish.

This means adjusting my routine to use products that can create that glowing, sunkissed look that doesn’t feel oil-slick. Good skincare is year-round, but summer skin has a once-in-a-season glow that you can’t miss.

Here’s what I’m using and what’s on my skin glow wishlist.

What's on My Top Shelf

Before achieving that luminous glow, you’ll need a solid base to start with a.k.a clean skin. That begins with a quality cleanser that can remove dirt, sweat and makeup without irritating the skin.

I use the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Facial Cleanser to wash off those impurities, and it’s a favorite. For the rest of my body, Naturium’s Glycolic Acid Body Wash helps cleanse the skin and lighten the stubborn hyperpigmentation on my body. After a few uses, my skin feels significantly smoother, too.

After cleansing, exfoliation is a must. Good news: you have options: chemical and physical exfoliants.

A chemical exfoliant uses chemicals—like Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) or Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs)—to remove dead skin cells. This helps lighten and soften your skin for a better base. AHAs are water-soluble, great for fine lines, discoloration and enlarged pores. BHAs are great oil-soluble, great for acne, sun-damaged skin and fine lines, too. PHAs are an alternative to both, best for sensitive skin.

Murad has an AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser that both cleanses and exfoliates.

A physical exfoliant is an exfoliator that manually removes dead skin cells using ingredients like sugars, powders or brushes. I stick to the basics like Tree Hut’s body scrub. Dermalogica is a must-have for facial exfoliator too; it leaves my skin feeling baby-bottom smooth after each use.

After your skin has been cleansed and exfoliated, replenish it with a moisturizer or hydrator. And no, they’re not the same thing.

A hydrator adds hydration—water—to your skin. A moisturizer seals in that moisture so your skin can retain it throughout the day.

So do you need both?

Not necessarily. According to Healthline, most hydrators and moisturizers contain similar ingredients. But if you have dry skin, try a moisturizer to lock in that hydration. If you have oily skin, use a water-based moisturizer so your skin doesn’t overproduce oil.

With both water and glycerin, natural hydrators, Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost moisturizer is a great hydrator. I also love Good Molecule’s moisturizer to lock in moisture; it’s thick yet feels lightweight on my skin.

To secure moisture for the rest of my body, I use Olay. It’s become a fan-favorite in my household for its hydration, scent and low price point. (It’s only $11!) Hyaluronic acid, which boosts skin elasticity, is also an active ingredient, so it’s improving my skin barrier day by day.

Time to add the glow (and sun protection) factor.

Glowing skin is the result of hydration, creating an appearance of a glass-like glow. For that glow, I use Tree Hut’s Firming Body Oil for a smell-good, feel-good shine to my skin. But if you’re willing to go deeper in your pockets, Moroccanoil has a body oil that provides both hydration and shimmer.

When I’m not wearing makeup, I round out my skincare routine with Black Girl Sunscreen for the SPF and the glass-skin look it gives me afterwards. With makeup, I add the sunscreen and top off my makeup with Juvia’s Place loose highlighter to accentuate the high points of my face. To make sure my lips are also shiny as everything else, I apply Essence’s lip gloss for maximal shine. Even better, it’s minimal stickiness.

There’s something about 70-degree weather that brings out the best in me. I’m no longer cozying up to a book or Living Single reruns at 11 p.m.; I’m outside in a full beat sipping a margarita and eating sushi at a rooftop bar. Raffia is my favorite texture this season, though it might be due to overexposure.

The butter yellow trend is getting a face lift, but not in the way you’d think.

Instead of pairing this popular pastel shade with other spring colors, I’m opting for an autumnal feel à la apple pie. Golden sunglasses from Lorvae and candy apple red shoes from ASOS pair exceptionally to create a look reminiscent of my favorite fall dessert. It’s warm. It’s vibrant. It’s rich.

In a week, two of my best friends will graduate law school.

They’ve attended the same university, walked the same yard and likely had the same professors, yet they have vastly different interests, passions and personalities.

One is a type-A girl with a Bible verse to share at any moment and an innumerable amount of Sims 4 custom content. She’s by-the-book and a gaming-enthusiast. The other? A type-B guy with the music taste to rival any DJ’s crate. He’s also my point-of-contact for breaking down international affairs.

In between working on bulletin boards for the church and watching me, my grandma would take me to the nail salon for her monthly manicures. I was young enough to need supervision but old enough to know nail days were an essential beauty ritual.

It was an honor to witness the magic within a nail technician’s hands.

Sitting at the edge of the leather seats, I would gaze at those rows of O.P.I nail polishes on the walls, the smell of monomer embedded into the air. For a child as girly as I was, this was heaven on earth.

Fast forward to the Snapchat-era when high school upperclassmen posted sparkly videos of their coffin-shaped nails to the newest Ella Mai song. Chunky glitter and neon polish was the mood for that era.

Then something shifted.

More french tips. Funny bunny nails. White toes.

I love minimalism, and there’s always a time and place for simple manicures—mainly when I don’t feel like doing anything extravagant. But in this stripped-back, barely-there era of beauty, it feels like fun nails are not in vogue.

As someone who does her own nails, I take pride in having unique nails and even greater pride in being my own nail tech.

The post-pandemic era of beauty has prioritized a more minimal approach to beauty, but nothing beats stiletto nails embellished with chunky pearls and charms.

Intentional curation is the ingredient to crafting fun, maximalist manicures. We all know black and white pair well, but who knows how to blend burnt orange and cool blue to create a desert chic look?

An eye for design matters.

In 2026, manicures are returning back to color and longer lengths—hello sherbert tones—but we can take this a step further with a return to funky designs, 3D patterns and elevated french tips with a twist.

Ombré is one of my favorite ways to embrace dimension into my nail routine. It’s versatile and an easy elevation for regular manicures.

I recreated aura/gradient nails using blooming gel and nail sponges, but the best and most seamless look for ombré nails is with an airbrush. Though it looks complicated, I’ve been watching how nail artists use it, and it’s not as intimidating as it looks. All it takes is acetone and your gel nail polish of choice. I prefer JODSONE’s brand since it’s inexpensive and comes in an array of colors.

Cynthia Erivo gave me inspo for detailed nails during the Wicked press run in 2025, and I’m running with it in 2026.

3D nails have been undoubtedly the most time-consuming part of my nail routine. The steady hands, the details and the time spent creating flowers for one pinky is enough to send me into a spiral. Instead, I stick to long, curved lines across the nails or even little “bubbles” for the three dimensional vibe.

Note: there’s a difference between solid builder gel and sculpted painting gel. The sculpted gel is best for shell-type designs and anything that requires more movement in your nail art. The builder gel is solid and for structured, more intricate designs like flowers.

When I think of sexuality and quiet confidence, I think of “The Velvet Rope” by Janet Jackson. Cherry red hair. Latex that clings like a second skin. Bold textures. Cashmere-soft vocals crooning over a Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis beat.

Janet Jackson was, and still is, the moment.

“The Velvet Rope,” the 1997 R&B album, finds Jackson at a crossroads. One side of the road is her pursuit and longing for a lover, both emotionally and physically. The other side provokes the listener to look beyond a proverbial velvet rope: this inherent need to feel desired by others. She confronted the parts of humanity that felt too taboo, from the HIV/AIDS epidemic to abusive partners to bisexuality.

It’s personal, provocative and Jackson’s magnum opus.

The album’s sonic and visual fingerprint still lingers within artists like Aaliyah, Britney Spears, Tinashe and more.

From African-inspired motifs to subtle gothic aesthetics, Jackson pushed the boundaries on what desire and rebellion looked like in the 90s. She balanced feminine and masculine attire through her structured tailoring, latex bodysuits and a lot of midriff. Wayne Scot Lukas, Jackson’s close friend and stylist, was the main executor of these looks.

She wore her sexuality on her sleeve, both metaphorically and literally.

Silk married with structured tailoring was a paradigm look for Jackson during “The Velvet Rope” era. And it still works well.

The top, a fitted blazer with padded shoulders, is angular, masculine and serious. The bottom? Feminine and flowing. It’s a look that stands out in and outside of an office.

If you’re in the workforce, this is an easy add to your wardrobe. Pair a waist-cinching blazer with a silky pair of trousers for a similar texture. Keep jewelry minimal though, instead adding a set of clogs or platform loafers to top the look off.

Alternative aesthetics were popular in the 90s, and Jackson was an underrated figure in that movement. Though they’re common now, facial piercings, tattoos and overall body modifications were still taboo. She still embraced it all, even a silver septum piercing, with plunging necklines and midriff.

A mildly risqué look means a maximalist, floral-print shirt is your centerpiece. Similar to many of Jackson’s off-duty looks during this era, a pair of baggy black pants will complement this. Chunky rings are also a must.

Leather jackets are a seasonal transition staple and can elevate even the most basic outfits. The hidden ingredient is in how you accessorize it.

One thing I love about Jackson during “The Velvet Rope” era is how she’s lowkey an outfit repeater. The army green cargo pants she’s wearing are identical to the ones she sports in the “Together Again” music video.

This is a sign to bring out some old statement pieces, like a fringe collar necklace, for some juxtaposition against the leather jacket and cargo pants. A set of chunky boots will elevate it even more.

Lyrically, Jackson strips back the layers to expose a more introspective side of herself. It, of course, bleeds into her visuals.

This is one of those outfits I love but know there’s no occasion where I would wear a feathered vest with a lacy bra. So instead of baring it all, try incorporating jeans with feathered detailing for that added texture. If you want to go all out, a loose-fitting silk shirt will also pair well with these pants.

A quintessential 90s outfit with the chunky boot, this look feels both nostalgic and right on time.

An oversized blazer is a staple. Combine this with some Dr. Martens or chunky boots and a corset for that quintessential blend of masculine and feminine textures and looks.

“The Velvet Rope” era was all about restricted colorways, bold accents and a sense of futurism. Vulnerability meets seduction meets confrontation.

What’s minimal in color is maximal in print.

I’m a big fan of thrifting pieces like this Intempo jacket or finding other, more structured pieces from a retailer like ThredUp. Zip down the jacket and lace up a pair of stiletto heels for a modern version of a night-out look.

Notice the similar silk skirt from Janet’s album listening party? I love seeing how Jackson repurposed pieces to give her outfits a different vibe for each event she attended. You can, too.

The original outfit worn at the 1997 VMAs went for $3,840 at auction, but luckily you can replicate this with a velvet red collared shirt and a floor-length skirt. A leopard-print bucket bag will be the cherry on top of this timeless outfit, too.

If 2026 is the year of the horse, then February is the month of the Sean Brown Curves bag.

If you don’t know Sean Brown from his totes, you may have seen his viral CD rugs circulating across social media.

The Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist and creative director of Curves, an expansive homeware and clothing brand, marries minimalist design with Black culture. The result? Distinguishable pieces and unmatched home staples.

On February 9, Brown restocked his knit tote bags. It sold out within minutes.

Curves bags have been popular among digital spaces for a while, but the notoriety it built this month feels like a precursor to the global popularity that awaits.

I’m also seeing similarities between the Curves tote and the Telfar shopping bag. The virality, the frequent out-of-stock cycles and the think pieces about why these totes are or aren’t the next best thing in shopping.

Owning one may be the next symbol of cultural cachet for younger consumers—much like the Telfars were and still are.

The televised theatrics of the early aughts remain a steady fixation in my mind.

Flavor of Love? My most-binged show. Bad Girls Club? A Tuesday night fixture. But America’s Next Top Model, a reality television-based competition series, served me a delectably chaotic slice of the modeling world.

As a child, the mix of eccentric personalities in front of the panel and the wild requests coming from behind it had me yearning for a spot as a contestant. Only the Tyra Banks could have models participate in humiliation rituals in the name of high fashion and a contract.

It’s since aged horribly, though.

Now, imagine my surprise when I learned that TikTok just discovered go-sees… about eight months ago. Though fashionably late to the go-see outfit trend, The Top Shelf is my newsletter, not a 24-hour publication. So let me reminisce!

A “go-see” is an in-person meeting where models connect with agencies, photographers and designers. Like an introduction before booking a shoot.

It was an insider term used in the modeling world, then popularized by ANTM.

Banks, in her true fashion, converted go-sees into full-blown challenges, making contestants scurry to several meetings across the city within a fixed time. Still, through chaotic taxi rides and flustered reactions, the models’ outfits were always understated, timeless and relatively practical for gallivanting around Manhattan.

During go-sees, models were a blank canvas for clients. Think minimal makeup, simple clothing and slick back hairdos.

And in an era of McBling and Y2K futurism, elevated basics translated beautifully on screen, then and especially now. Mainly because the “go-see outfit” is an easily replicable recipe: a black shirt, skinny jeans, a shoulder bag and heels.

Having a customized go-see outfit (for in and outside of work) is the perfect crutch when digging through your closet yields no results. Personally, the kitten heel and jeans combo has saved me from much peril.

You may not be a contestant on one of the most iconic shows of the 2000s, but it’s possible, and incredibly easy, to use on-duty model looks as a style template that complements your daily life.

To be loved intimately by someone is an unparalleled pleasure, but I’d be lying if I said there are way better things than a gift from the heart—specifically your own. Seriously, who knows you better than you?

I spent my last few bucks in college buying this and Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Crush 40, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It’s velvety, long-lasting and unfortunately worth the price tag.

Patrick Kelly’s Runway of Love — $45 $13

A perk of having cultured friends is learning their style obsessions. Patrick Kelly is the obsession.

Kelly, a Black-American designer, used racial imagery like the golliwog in his clothing to make timeless designs. His clothing, famously adorned with buttons, has a certain whimsy that felt ironic yet playful in the cultural backdrop of the 80s and 90s.

Eclecticism, gaiety and nostalgia marry in his designs, so it’s a no-brainer that this book is high on my wishlist.

Adidas Japan Shoes — $130

Last year, one of the best pieces of style advice I took was to dress for my actual life, not my ideal one. As much as I would love to sport Carrie Bradshaw-style kitten heels to Trader Joe’s, I love a comfy shoe that’s both practical but stylish enough to stand out on aisle six.

The Anise bag is the Le Teckel bag’s little sister: similarly stylish and more attainable. That’s reason enough for me to want it in every color.
