A SCROOGE'S GUIDE TO VALENTINE'S DAY
I'm bad at love but impeccably good at scouting last-minute gifts for your 𝗅̶𝗈̶𝗏̶𝖾̶𝗋̶ self.

Last year, if you asked me which Sex and the City character I was, I would’ve said I was Carrie: messy with romance, profligate with spending and navigating this decade of life with an endearing sense of wit and awkwardness.
Expensive heels and credit card bills abound!
Yet, in the age of gray-area romances and a nightmarish economy, I’ve discovered there’s something deliciously appealing in being a single woman who’s confident in that status. No situationships. No “Big is moving to Paris” moments.
There’s a growing trend in being paramour-free, too.
Among Americans aged 25-34, the proportion living without a spouse or partner has doubled in five decades, to 50% for men and 41% for women.
The rise of singlehood is reshaping the world, The Economist
On the other side of that messy Carrie Bradshaw type of love, there are the Mirandas of the world. The analytical lovers, the skeptical romantics and most importantly, those in love with life outside of relationships.
Statistically and anecdotally, it’s no longer taboo to be alone. For that reason, I’m proclaiming myself as Miranda now, indulging in life as it is.
To be loved intimately by someone is an unparalleled pleasure, but I’d be lying if I said there are way better things than a gift from the heart—specifically your own. Seriously, who knows you better than you?
Ditch your Mr. Big, and get yourself something for Valentine’s Day instead.
No strings attached.

Slocyclub Square Blue Light Blocking Glasses
If you’re like me and currently cozying up with a steamy romance novel—hello Sweet Heat—then you’ve felt the sting of strained eyes from e-reading.
These blue light blocking glasses are a personal favorite to remedy that problem.
I feel like a character in A Different World: studious, grounded and effortlessly stylish. They’re an essential blend of that 90s intellectual aesthetic mixed with comfort.
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
With a Kindle, there’s no excuse for not completing your reading list this year.
The paperwhite is best for at-home readers who want less social media distractions and more quality time nuzzled in a book. They’re also easier on your eyes since blue light is less of an issue. (If you enjoy reading while traveling, the basic Kindle is ideal for commute-style reads since it’s smaller.)
With the average book holding one megabyte of storage, the paperwhite’s 16 gigabytes give you an abundance of space to read whatever’s next on your wishlist.

Anjali Perfumes Chai Chai Chai
Gourmand girls rise: Anjali Perfumes, an independent perfumery based in Washington, just restocked their latest perfume. With notes of cookies, cardamom, sugar and soft musk, it’ll top off your winter body care combo decadently.
Even better: Anjali Perfumes will be donating 10% of profits this February to the Center for Constitutional Rights.
HigherDOSE Serotonin Soak
Ditch the Lush bombs this season and opt for bath soaks instead.
HigherDOSE has been a name circulating through the wellness industry for a while, so it’s no surprise their soaks are loved. It’s more than just epsom salt, though; reviewers say it increases serotonin production and lowers cortisol levels—the hormones influencing happiness and stress, respectively.
For $40, it’s a splurge, but it’s worth it for a new bathtime ritual.

Crate & Barrel Nattie Red Wine Glass
Looking to channel your inner Olivia Pope? This is a no-brainer purchase.
It’s a kitchen staple, but if you’re feeling sumptuous, personalize it (with just three characters only) for $15 extra.
Secura Electric Wine Opener
I’m not afraid to admit I love wine but struggle to open my own bottles. An electric wine opener is—of course—extra but shortens the process of opening my Sauvignon Blanc. Or for you, your drink of choice.

Anya Lust Iris Satin Sleep Set
Lingerie is only for a man you.
Anya Lust, a Black-owned lingerie brand, is an underrated staple for chic but inexpensive nightwear. This set, a babydoll and a g-string, only comes in midnight blue. Fortunately, the brand has different sets in red, black and baby pink for wear.
Bedsure GentleSoft® Blanket
Another six weeks of winter means extra large, extra soft blankets are a must.
I’m spending that time cozied up with a Bedsure blanket, buttered popcorn and a side of trash reality TV. What are you doing?
Love day is approaching, but this season undoubtedly feels different. Times feel very loveless and desolate lately, and I’d be remiss if I wrote about shopping without sharing how to also use your money as a resource to support others in need.
If you spend your well-earned dollars showing a little love to yourself, consider also donating to charities, food programs and justice centers advocating for those less fortunate.
I pray this Valentine’s Day is a reprieve for you, and may the love you show yourself be extended to your family and community.
If you’re in a relationship, what are your V-Day plans? If you’re single, what plans do you have?
I’d love to have some ideas.
